HKRG 2016 Season-Opener

Hard Knox Roller Girls

Double-Header

Home Bout 6/4/2016

The 2016 Hard Knox Roller Derby season is upon us.  This year is momentous.  This year is huge.  This year marks a milestone.  HKRG turns 10 years old this year!  A decade of amazing derby action, excitement, athleticism, and pride is here.  HKRG has come a long way and they want to celebrate with you.  Join HKRG this season for some high-intensity action coupled with hometown pride.   New for this year: HKRG has moved to the Cooper Athletic Center at the Maryville College Campus.  This new location is beautiful, spacious, and it will allow for more future growth!  HKRG has a lot in store for their fans this year so don’t blink and miss a thing.

Starting off the 2016 season, Hard Knox hits the floor against Atlanta, Georgia.  In the first game of the night, your Hard Knox Brawlers face off against The Jukes of Hazard at 5pm.   The Jukes is Atlanta’s “C Team,” but don’t let that fool you.  Atlanta Roller Girls (ARG) is one of the top teams in the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), currently ranked 15 out of 288 teams worldwide!  ARG is a founding member of the WFTDA and has taken an integral part in the shaping of HKRG as well, by offering training assistance through personalized boot camps and scrimmages. HKRG and ARG have been working together since HKRG’s inception in 2006.  Regardless of that, HKRG is going to fight to the finish and work hard to match ARG’s clout, tenure and ability.

Next, your Hard Knox Allstars take on the Rumble B’s at 7pm.   Hard Knox and the B’s have tangoed before, but unfortunately, Hard Knox got stung in the past.   The last game took place in 2014 with the B’s prevailing with a more than 100-point lead.  HKRG is a new team this season, with a new venue and a renewed drive to overcome.  This is going to be a tough match with a lot of strategic plays and fancy footwork to entertain the masses.

The night is dedicated to our fallen veterans.  The featured charity is the East Tennessee Honor Guard, which was established to honor the military service of deceased veterans.  Their mission statement: “Our desire is to see that the highest honor is paid to our deceased brothers and sisters as well as their families.  Honoring those who have served allows a grateful nation to pay final tribute to veterans who, in times of war and peace, stood strong in defense of the United States of America.”   Show your patriotism and help honor our fallen American veterans by wearing your best red, white, and blue regalia.  America!!  Please bring a nonperishable food donation for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Blount County in honor of our fallen friends.

ABOUT HKRG -The Hard Knox Roller Girls (HKRG) is an all female flat track roller derby league located in Knoxville, TN.  Founded in January 2006, HKRG includes women representing all walks of life – students, mothers, wives, professionals, and everything in between – yet all maintain the same underlying spirit: that of a Warrior, a Woman, and a Winner.  As a WFTDA league, HKRG is a licensed non-profit organization that is skater owned and operated.  The mission of the Hard Knox Roller Girls is to provide athletic entertainment while promoting the sport of roller derby.  Our program provides regular supervised training, instruction, and competition that improve members' individual athletic ability, self-discipline and character, while preparing to represent Knoxville at a national level.  We are dedicated to providing community outreach through events, activities, and charity sponsorship.  We are also advocates for similar roller derby leagues that seek to encourage the sport of roller derby nationally and internationally.
